Cubbyhouse Montessori

History of cubbyhouse children's development centre

The name Cubbyhouse was chosen by the original owners, Bronwyn and Thomas Collins and they built Cubby One in 1990. The centre commenced as an occasional day care centre for the first twelve months. Bronwyn Collins then sold Cubby to Dr. Sid Lau in June 1994, who built Cubby Two after removing a house on the land Bronwyn Collins owned.

Susan Vivian, who worked for Cubbyhouse since 1991, shared Cubbyhouse originally had four rooms which facilitated up to early primary school children who attended Payne Road Preschool. Programming in the early days was entirely focused on what the children had enjoyed during the day. Paper work was minimal which allowed the staff great interaction with all.

Since then, Cubbyhouse has developed a great reputation and is well known in the area. The centre embraces the Montessori philosophy and adheres to the Early Years Learning Frameworks and Queensland kindergarten learning guidelines. In January 2018, the centre’s official trading name changed to “The Gap Cubbyhouse Montessori”. The centre is a member of Montessori Australia, Montessori Schools and Centres and the International Montessori Council.

In February 2022 the family company (Dollies Pty Ltd) purchased another centre which is called “Spring Hill Cubbyhouse Montessori”. This is located below the Canossian sisters convent where “Holy Family Day Care” was run by the sisters until Early Learning Australia took over. After refurbishments ELA sold the business to Dollies Pty Ltd. SHCM is now a sister Montessori long day care centre.
